Water quality measurements - Sentinel 2 - MSI

Monitoring Water Quality (WQ) is essential for understanding the ecological dynamics of drainage systems. Satellite data offer an effective support for this purpose when adequate spectral and spatial resolutions are available. In this study, conducted within the IDEWA project, we investigated a sector of Zaragoza Province (NE Spain) around Mequinenza, at the confluence of the Ebro and Segre rivers, representing the outlet of waters from Lleida city and the Algerri–Balaguer irrigation district. We focused on two key parameters—Total Suspended Material (TSM) and chlorophyll‑a (chl‑a)—initially derived from Sentinel‑2 MSI data using standard algorithms. Their performance was assessed against in situ measurements, allowing us to test different atmospheric correction approaches and to develop locally tuned models. The resulting database includes chl‑a and TSM maps from 2017 to 2023 generated using these optimized models.
