Soil solutions - Ravine Quiock

Source

We collect soil solutions using lysimeters (Soil Moisture Inc., Santa Barbara, CA) placed at various depths in the soil (ranging from 15 to 1250 cm deep). A lysimeter consists of a porous ceramic candle mounted on a 5 cm diameter tube, made watertight with a rubber stopper equipped with a capillary pump. A vacuum of 60-70 centibars is created inside the lysimeter, allowing the aspiration of free soil water into the tube. Water is collected after 3-4 weeks of aspiration. The samples are brought back to the observatory to be filtered (using a 0.2 ?m cellulose acetate filter), conditioned, and analyzed. For each sample, we prepare: a vial for the analysis of anions (Cl-, NO3-, SO42-), a vial for the analysis of cations (acidified sample with HNO3; Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+), and a vial for the analysis of major elements. Depending on the ongoing research projects, other vials may be prepared for specific analyses.
