Lineage

Natural Earth is a public domain map dataset available at 1:10m, 1:50m, and 1:110 million scales, featuring tightly integrated vector and raster data. Natural Earth was built through a collaboration of many volunteers and is supported by NACIS (North American Cartographic Information Society), and is free for use in any type of project (see our Terms of Use for more information). The distributed collection here is the 1:10m one.

The present "Countries" layer distinguishes between metropolitan (homeland) and independent and semi-independent portions of sovereign states. Each country is coded with a world region that roughly follows the United Nations setup. Countries are coded with standard ISO and FIPS codes. French INSEE codes are also included.

Disclaimer:
Natural Earth Vector draws boundaries of countries according to defacto status. We show who actually controls the situation on the ground. Please feel free to mashup disputed area themes to match particular political outlook.
