PhenoStras2022: an urban tree phenology dataset
EasyData

The PhenoStras2022 dataset was collected throughout the year 2022 across 40 green sites located within the urban area of Strasbourg (France) using a smartphone camera (Samsung SM-A528B/DS – 64 MP). Two types of photographic acquisitions were performed: Digital Hemispherical Photographs (DHP), captured using a removable 180° fisheye lens, and Front-View Photographs (FVP), taken with the smartphone's standard sensor. These image-based observations were complemented by site-level phenological monitoring using a simplified BBCH scale, providing field-based annotations of key developmental stages of urban trees across the whole season.

Overview

Lineage
PhenoStras2022 is a ground-based, smartphone-derived phenology dataset documenting urban trees across a full growing season in 2022 in Strasbourg (France). Data were collected at 40 deciduous “green sites” using a low-cost acquisition setup combining Digital Hemispherical Photography (DHP), Front-View Photography (FVP), and field-based phenological observations following a simplified BBCH scale. The dataset includes JPEG images, tabular CSV files, and a GeoPackage with site locations, species information, and measurement metadata, supporting the derivation of indicators such as Leaf Area Index (LAI) and Green Chromatic Coordinate (GCC). PhenoStras2022 is designed for validating remote sensing products, supporting urban climate and phenology studies, and providing a reproducible, easily replicable protocol for participatory urban vegetation monitoring. This research contributed to carry out a part of a PhD Thesis, which is supported by Grand-Est Region and the University of Strasbourg (Doctoral School ED413) - Bressant C. (PhD 2025)
