Fire Carbon Emissions in France

This repository contains estimates of gas emissions from fires in natural areas (mainly forests and shrubland) in mainland France. This data corresponds to a rasterization of carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions in burnt areas. The fire polygons are derived from a comparison of Landsat (1984-2017) and Sentinel-2 (2017-ajd) satellite images at fine resolution (10 to 30m). The method is based on the Global Fire Emission Database (GFED) conceptual framework. It aims to quantify stocks of aerial carbon pools (leaves, branches, trunks, shrubs, herbaceous plants, litter) and underground carbon pools (soil organic matter, peat, lignite). Combustion completeness are applied to the stocks to quantify the amount of combusted carbon material. Finally, emission factors are applied to each combusted pool to quantify the quantity of CO2 and CO emitted at each point of the burned patch. These combustion rates have been calibrated on measurements from atmospheric towers positioned close to the fires in 2022.
